Five points to succeed as a medical tourist

As we know, medical tourism is the topic of this blog. To enjoy this combination of wellness and healthcare alongside leisure, different details must be taken into consideration. The purpouse of the trip is to get a successful surgical procedure, which will rejuvenate you mentally, physically and emotionally.

To achieve the goal we are looking for, we will investigate the following points:

The Procedure: Find out how the surgical procedure is going to be and compare your expectations with what is achievable with surgery. Also find out if you need a follow-up after the operation, the recovery time required and whether it would be appropiate rehabilitation time with an expert.

The Hospital: When choosing the right Hospital for your needs, you should consider the Hospital acreditation, fame and awards as well as facilities an equipment. Try to access to the hospital statistics and the rate of success.

The Surgeon: Check the certifications of the specialist, his years of preparation and training, experience performing the operation that you require and its recognition within the world of medicine and his reputation.

The Destination Country: You should base the choice on the quality of the Surgeon and Hospital. If there are several surgeons with an aproppiate reputation, the following items for your choice should be the distance and cost. I want to emphasize that the most important thing is quality.

Accommodation: In the case that you have to wait after the operation to retourn back home, you need to find a quiet place to relax, with the amenities you need at that time. It should be near the Hospital of your intervention and well comunicated.

These are the five points that should be taken into account when you are planning your medical trip. Then you will have completed all necessary medical care.

Cataract surgery

¿What is a cataract?. A cataract is not a desease, is the loss of natural lens of the eye transparency (Crystalline). It is a physiological process that occurs along a lifetime. Most people over 60 have this problem some measure.

¿ What are the symptoms? Cataract produces a gradual loss of vision. It can also cause glare, poor night vision and see the colors worse. Other signs are frequent changes of graduation or begin to see well without glasses closely.

¿What is the treatment? The only solution for cataract is a surgycal treatment. The cataract surgery is a surgycal intervention that in experienced hands and using the latest techniques achieved an outstanding result and complete visual recovery. It is done so outpatient, without entering the hospital, and the entire process takes less than fifteen minutes. The anesthesia is applied only in drops, with no need to puncture and cover the eye. Through an incision of slightly more than 2 mm the opaque lens is removed and replaced by a lens that will completely restore vision.

There are several types of intraocular lenses: Each patient is studied prior to decide which type of lens is best.

Monofocal: Lets you see afar.

Multifocal: Lets you see afar and nearer.

Tórica: Corrects astigmatism

¿When should we carry out a cataract operation? The decision must be made jointly by patient and ophthalmologist. The ideal moment is when there is a reduced of vision. You do not have to wait a long time, if the cataract is advanced and the vision is low, there will be complications during the intervention.

It is one of the most commonly performed operations in Spain, and the most popular among tourists who visit our cities.

The "medical tourists" avoid waiting for the health system

Every time more and more news and articles that I find, confirm that a large percentage of "medical tourists" seek high quality medical services abroad. Contrary to the widespread perception that the tourist is just operating in another country looking for low cost surgery. Furthermore, many of these tourists are seeking medical services beyond cosmetic surgery.

According to a press release found on Reuters.com on Wednesday the 5th of August in 2009 from London, about 40 percent of British people undergoes surgery outside their country to avoid the waiting lists of the National Health System, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The study revealed that only 10 percent of those "medical tourists" who travel for surgery, do it for cosmetic surgery.

The remaining 90 percent go abroad for medical care and treatments related to eye disorders work, dialysis, orthopedic problems, addictions and cancer treatments.

YourSurgeryAbraod.com, in collaboration with the International Medical Travel Association, surveyed 7,000 people to conduct the study, which also revealed that because of the crisis 40 percent of respondents take into account cheaper treatments abroad, compared with the previous year.

"The 71 per cent of British people in our study use the Internet to find the treatment options available abroad, creating a multimillion-dollar industry," said Adam Nethersole director of YourSurgeryAbroad.com.

The figures showed that if it is not possible to travel, 22 percent of the poppulation prefer to postpone the operation to get in a long waiting list.

The sample showed that about 80 percent of people do not know that, thanks to a European directive on cross-border medicine, patients can be treated in a country of the European Union and make it pay by your Country National Health System.

The medical tourism

Medical tourism is the term used to describe the growing practice of traveling abroad in search of medical treatments. This service is experiencing strong growth worldwide in recent years. There are several factors influencing this growth:
  • The long queues are collapsing many health systems.
  • The search for good service, warm climates and suggestive environments for the holidays.
  • The high costs of private medical services in industrialized countries.

Forecast growth of medical tourism in the U.S. in the coming years

It is estimated that in 2008 the global medical tourism revenue was around $ 60,000 million, with an estimated $ 100,000 million for 2010.
